Where confidence empowers people to thrive on their own terms
Why confidence?
The Kaya Commons’ north star is our communities and their aspirations. It is our deeply felt purpose to play the role of a flywheel as they pursue their best lives.
🎯 Our Mission
To build confidence across generations in an ever-changing world by crafting experiences and building support systems that help people take the next step, whatever that step may be.
👀 Our Vision
A world where confidence opens doors for everyone, on their own terms.
🌟 Our Values
Dependability
Just like how a good kaya toast can be counted upon to perk up one’s spirits early in the morning, we too are an organisation that can be trusted and relied on. This means to follow through on our commitments and leave no stone unturned in delivering what our partners require of us.
Experimentation
Numerous variants of kaya exist across south-east asia, with each culture adding its own spin. We draw on that tradition of experimentation to try new ways of doing old things, looking at problems from alternative angles, and to always be open to even the most seemingly outlandish of ideas.
Partnership
Kaya is never eaten on its own. It is lathered onto crispy toast, paired with luxurious butter, and accompanied by perfectly runny eggs and a cup of hand-pulled kopi. In a similar vein, we are cognisant that the impact we seek cannot be made real alone. We actively partner service users and other people sector organisations to identify areas needing attention and to amplify the reach of our work.
A 📝 from our founder, Pratyay
When I first ran an upskilling programme for beneficiaries at my local social service agency who were looking to break into tech, my goal was for everyone find a job in the ecosystem. When the programme ended with participants unable to find a tech job, I was convinced the whole initiative was a failure for not having achieved that single, tangible outcome.
What I could not see - until feedback from the participants enlightened me - was that completing the programme and earning a tech certification had in fact given them a sense of achievement that would transform into a deeper confidence to take the next step, whatever that might have been for them. That was an outcome far more enduring. I realised then that being fixated on the short term was to miss the forest for the trees: to see that success begets success. For someone to feel in their bones what an army commander once told me, “if you did it once, you can do it again”.
Programs that grow with you
To grow confidence, we believe that two ingredients are critical. The first is energy: the physical, mental, and emotional vitality that is often drawn from a supportive community. The second is immersion: deep, meaningful experiences that initially challenge but eventually expand our comfort zones.
It is on this belief that we craft our programs.
